FORGET Get Friday!

After reading the 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss, I signed up with GetFriday.

On their home page, they explained that excess demand meant they were running 3 weeks between signup and assignment of an assistant.

After waiting more than 4 weeks, I was finally assigned an assistant.

My first task was to have her create a simple 1-page website. I provided all the copy and the design template.

By the next day, I heard back from her, saying she could not complete this, but she would forward the task to the pool of in-house experts. She said she would get back to me, to let me know when I could expect to have the work completed. Fair enough.

The next communication I get from her is a bill for prorated hours for the month (since they didn't assign me an assistant until the last week of August). This email had a request for more work, specifically, "You didn't assign me any tasks yet."

Hmmm, that was a bit frustrating. Well, maybe it's just the language barrier, I thought. I replied back and asked when I could expect to have my website completed.

No answer.

A few more days passed, and I wrote again. I am STILL waiting to find out when I can expect to receive my completed task. No answer.

Today they charged my credit card for a full month's services.

Do you think I was pissed off? Not nearly as pissed as my husband.

I told him there was no problem -- the company has a 7-day trial period, and I can cancel for any reason. Seems I have reason enough, seeing as they haven't done squat except waste my time.

He decides to call them immediately. Now THAT was a waste of time!

It took him 10 minutes to get a supervisor on the phone, who turns out to be a team leader who is committed to "saving" our account (and didn't seem to have any authority whatsoever to process a refund). My husband explains in no uncertain terms (at least it seemed plain enough to me, even for a person who uses English as a second -- or third -- language) that we can not be saved, please refund our money now.

The conversation did not go well.

Apparently, it will take 3 hours to get a supervisor on the phone, which I am pretty much expecting to be another series of pleas to "give us a another chance Sir."

Bummer.

The whole thing turned out to be a colossal waste of time.

I'm not worried about my money -- I have copies of all the emails I've sent them asking for follow up, and I also have a record of all the times I called (during the 3-actually-4-week waiting period) and no one answered. If they refuse to refund my money today, I will contact my credit card to initiate a chargeback, so no worries about that.

But what's the lesson here?

For starters, it would be smart to get more than an author's recommendation before using any overseas service. I even have a friend in Alabama who tried the service -- but I didn't think to ASK HIM before I signed up. Big "duh" on my part.

Also, since I am definitely a "right now" kind of person, what on earth made me think I could stand to work with a company that could wait A MONTH to get me started?

Lessons learned.

I tried them also after reading the book and I went through a very similar experience. I love the idea of outsourcing and I will look for an alternative. My goal with outsourcing
is to have the project done. I did not find them seamless at all. Glad/sad to hear you had same experience.

Bummer. Hey, if you find a service you like better (rather than outsourcing individual projects via elance, which is good for some stuff, but not others), please let me know or post it here!

You know, I checked out a couple of services after reading the book as well, and my intros with potential providers didn't inspire me to move forward. So I'm currently sans VA.

I also realized that much of what I COULD outsource to someone else, I actually enjoy doing. Even though it does detract from my productive income-earning hours, I like the variety and the hands-on work. So I'm figuring for now it worked out for the best.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Amy.

Has anyone found an alternative? It would be good to know if there is one out there that people can recommend.

I tried on such service and they work good. I suggest you should try. Their web site is www.asksunday.com They gave me a trial offer for one whole month and the experience I had was great.

Thanks for the heads up Amy!

I have just started enquiries with GetFriday on a small research job of about 10 hours, but it has taken a week for them not to reply.

Now that I have stumbled upon your 'recommendation' I think I will look elsewhere.

If I find an alternative, I'll post back

hmmm, I don;t know about this "asksunday" that was recommended...they have ZERO alexa information, which is not typically a good sign. I can't say I would recommend it, nor will I try it myself -- too new of a service.

well, I signed up for ask sunday last night, and thought i would give them three easy tasks to see how they do:

task 1: find out the venue and address of a concert i'm attending in a week and get me driving directions from Colorado Springs to the venue, then from the venue to a restaurant we're planning on eating at afterwards, then get directions from the restaurant back to my friend's house.

result: they were close. they found the venue, they found the restaurant, but the directions began at my house, 250 miles from Colorado Springs where I'd requested the directions begin

task 2: Find prices on flights for my mom to come visit on some weekend between now and the end of November.

result: They found prices on flights for my mom to come visit from now THROUGH the end of november.

Task 3: Call me at 9:15am to remind me to print off a report to bring to a 10am meeting, then follow up with an email at 9:50

result: No call, no email.

So... i think it's time for me to cancel.

As a follow up, I have decided to channel my disappointment with AskSunday into something productive (hopefully). I like their idea of 30 tasks a month for a set fee, but the language barrier is just too great, so I am building a very similar service, called Zirga, which will launch on October 29 with all native English speaking agents.

If anyone from this blog is interested in this, I'd be happy to give you a 2 week free trial when we go live, with no need for you to submit any billing information...

You can be our test dummies, and, hopefully, our advocates!

You can shoot me an email at:
sam@zirga.com

Best,
Sam Hotchkiss
CEO, Zirga, Inc.

I'm also going through a similar process at the same time with the Get Friday guys. Very, very disappointing. I had such high hopes after reading Tim's book and I've given them a lot of leeway. But the result has been really bad, they also promised a refund and have failed to do for two months now. I wonder if it's time to go for the chargeback.

Yep, I would recommend a chargeback while there's still time. BTW, I have been using Zirga (see previous comment from Sam) for about 3 months now and I have been most pleased with their service. I highly recommend them! http://Zirga.com

Hi Amy,

I feel bad about your bitter expeience with some Virtual Assistant services. But, I am using an Assistant in India. Though he dont run any such big company, He is very well doing his job as a Virtual Assistant. Rate is also very cheaper & negotiable. (<10$).
He accept all kinds of Research, Data Entry & simple Webdesigning works, except the Phoning tasks.
If you want more details, please contact him at virtualmasters@yahoo.com.
I can assure you that he will satisfy your expectations.

Perhaps looking at the professional associations for the Virtual Assistant industry might be a better option for you. In fact, I know it would and you would get a response on the day and be assigned a VA shortly thereafter. In fact, you get to make the choice which VA you want to work with.
Try http://vanetworknews.com/va-organisations/ for a list of networks.

Ah, even the post before mine displays a problem. Funny, I rarely hear from other virtual professionals when I'm reading these posts on a variety of blogs.I'm a US-based virtual professional and pro-blogger.I have 7 clients now and work nearly full-time and have had to turn away work. I've also read Tim's book.

Initially when growing my business, I was bidding against providers from all over the world on sites like elance and getafreelancer.com. The prices were ridiculously low.

I just completely rewrote 30 articles for a client who found her services on one of these sites. The writer was non-native English speaking and the content was not usable.

GET PERSONAL REFERRALS AND DEMAND WRITING SAMPLES, regardless of what the tasks are.

I realize this blog post is almost a year old but after reading all the comments, I just had to add my two cents!

Have any of you ever thought of hiring an independant VA instead of going through large companies that promise 'not-so-great' service?

I'm still chuckling in disbelief at the one-page website task that would have probably taken me 2 hours to complete. You could of had your webpage up and running that same day and satisfy your "right-now" kind of personality!

However I do have to wonder why so many people like to outsource overseas! Their service can be OK, especially with certain task (data entry could be one of them) but in general, isn't it easier to work with someone that understand and is fluent in your own language with the proper skills? I know the rates are not even comparable to those in North America but like the saying goes: You get what you pay for! Which in this case, wasn't much of anything!

I'm sorry your experience with a VA wasn't so great! I hope you were able to move on and had a better experience with a local VA.
